JANUARY IS CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Cervical cancer is 3rd most common cancer in women world-wide! The cells begin most of the time in the squamous cells of the cervix and take a long time to turn into cancer. Abnormal PAPS smears that report dysplasia is the beginning of the processes of normal cells becoming pre-cancerous.

Almost all cervical cancers stem from the Human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is sexually transmitted. A woman's sexual habits and patterns can increase her risk for cervical cancer. Risky sexual practices include having sex at an early age, having multiple sexual partners, and having multiple partners or partners who participate in high-risk sexual activities.

The women who are being diagnosed with cervical cancer typically have not had regular PAP smears.
• If you are 21 - 65 you should have PAP smears every 3 years to screen for cervical cancer.
• If you are under 21 but have been sexually active for at least 1 year a PAP smear should be done every 3 years as well
• At 65 it is ok to ask your medical provider if PAP smears can be stopped.
