Allergies and Asthma Awareness Month

By: Elena Jamscek

This is peak season for allergies and asthma. The weather is getting warmer, we are going outside more, and the pollen count is HIGH! Asthma and allergies affect more than 13 million children in the US.

Asthma presents itself as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest. There are several types of asthma as well. You can have exercise induced asthma which means you only get those symptoms when you exert yourself. You can have allergy induced asthma which only occurs during the season that produces your allergen. You can also have intrinsic asthma which means it affects you all the time.

Allergies present themselves as itchy eyes, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. Its hard to tell exactly what you are allergic to in the environment. Grass, trees, molds, fungus, animals, and possibly foods can be the culprit of your allergy symptoms. You can be allergic to just one thing, a few things, or all of them. The best way to know is to get allergy tested.

We offer allergy testing in the clinic for all patients with major medical insurance. Just note that you should be off of any allergy medicine for 7 days before you get tested for it to be accurate. So if you notice symptoms of allergies come see us for testing at any time.
