As we start to reopen our economy and are going out more to shop and bring things into our homes, it is going to become imperative that we take extra precaution in the way we clean our surfaces to prevent the spread of COVID 19. We know that the virus causing COVID 19 can live on some hard surfaces for up to 3 to 4 days and can be transmitted and infect a person within that time frame. The CDC recommends cleaning bars, counter tops, and other hard surfaces in you home at least every 24 hours. I would recommend that you do it immediately after bringing items such as grocery bags, carry out items, etc. and setting them down to decrease the risk of exposure. In addition to counter tops and tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, computers, keyboards, and phones should be cleaned routinely.

If the area is soiled, you should first cleanse the area with soap and water and follow up with a common household disinfectant. Diluted household bleach effective against coronaviruses if properly mixed. This is inexpensive and is found in most homes. The solution should be mixed with appropriate proportions in order to ensure that the virus is killed. Alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol may also be used as and effective disinfectant.

Bleach Solution:
5 TBSP (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water
OR
4 tsp bleach per quart of water
