The goal of thyroid supplementation is to create a balance in the thyroid hormones in the body that is similar to normal thyroid function. Too much or too little T3 can cause the body to experience an upset in its homeostasis, creating severe medical disorders.  The proper balance of T4 (inactive thyroid hormone) and T3 (active hormone) regulates body functions such as metabolism, temperature and weight control, and decreases risk factors for heart attack and stroke.

The thyroid supplement that is most like the human body is Armour Thyroid and contains desiccated thyroid hormones (all the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Because it is from a natural source and mimics the human body’s thyroid, it is the preferred supplement for most people. However, if the person is allergic to pork, the next option would be NP thyroid, which is compounded with natural T4 and T3. There are synthetic versions of both T4 and T3, but I do not recommend them if a natural form can be used.

During hormone supplementation, it is important to check your labs frequently to assess for effectiveness.  The goal is to optimize the T3 level in order to ensure that each cell in the body is functioning at its best. Your provider may want to order labs for you every 3 to 4 months during your therapy. The dosage of your supplementation may be changed depending on your lab work and the symptoms you are experiencing.
