Spring is here, and with it comes the return of pesky bugs. From mosquitoes to ticks, these bugs can be more than just a nuisance; they can also carry diseases. To protect yourself from bug bites this spring, there are a few simple steps you can take.

First, wear light-colored clothing when you’re outdoors. Bugs are attracted to dark colors, so wearing lighter colors will make you less visible to them. Additionally, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to cover as much of your skin as possible. Be sure to tuck your pants legs in, this will help to keep them from crawling up your legs inside.

Second, use insect repellent. Repellents containing DEET or picaridin are effective at keeping bugs away. Be sure to follow the directions on the label when applying the repellent.

Third, avoid areas where bugs are likely to be present. This includes standing water, tall grasses, and wooded areas. If you’re going to be in these areas, wear protective clothing and use insect repellent. If you are going into a wooded area, use a product with 20% more DEET. Also, keep any container that might hold water drained as much as possible. From water toys to pet bowls, they can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Finally, check yourself for ticks after spending time outdoors. Ticks can attach themselves to your skin and cause serious illnesses if not removed promptly. Be sure to check your body thoroughly for any ticks that may have attached themselves. Specifically around your ears, underarms, hair lines, backs of legs and don’t forget inside the belly button. Also keep an eye on your pets as they will unknowingly carry ticks into the home.
